about

Always wanna tip my hat to The Fortunes and their "You've Got Your Troubles ..." Folkies remember "Somebody Else's Troubles" bar in Lincoln Park (as well as "Orphan's"). There's a connection here somewhere. Hadn't done anything in dropped D tuning for quite a while. I enjoyed getting back to it. The little Eastman guitar I've been using a lot seemed suited to it.

lyrics

In the Mexican sun I walked 'long the shore
there was nobody in sight.
Thought I'd found a way 'round, didn't want to backtrack,
save me some time I just might.

It was a sea cliff 200 feet high
that I might be able to climb.
Mere child's play for invincible teens,
at least so I thought at the time.

Not far from the summit, the rocks slid away,
from under my feet coming loose.
I cursed myself for so foolish a stunt,
looked like I had cooked my own goose.

I took a gamble, the one chance I had to
reach for a notch in the wall.
To this very day, don't know how I survived.
Somehow I did not slip and fall.

Seems odd that the twilight could make it so clear,
though you should have seen it before.
Romance, that old scoundrel, that trapped you and bound you
has come around looking for more.

A scoundrel will take from the mouths of the poor,
feast 'til he can't fit through the door,
knock down the building just to devour
the love that you've been living for.

The creature before me, hungry and cold,
implores me to give up the ghost.
Its voice is cracking, its lips are a-smacking.
How could I have been such a poor host?

Cookie-cutter surgeons and old politicians
are on course to improve their scores.
I tip my hat to the awesome cliff divers
who make the long climb from the shore.

I've been a poor man and I've had no money,
and I've played the part of a fool.
Belonging to no one may have its moments
when you're looking for nothing to do.

I have made peace with a certain demon,
but they never travel solo.
Why should it be ever so complicated?
There're some things we'll never know.
